The Comprehensive Guide to Hulu's Best Shows by Genre

Hulu has a great selection of different categories. With so many to pick from it can be hard to choose, but this guide has the best for every category.
If you've never given streaming giant Hulu a chance, or even if you have, we're about to reveal the best shows in the top genres that will have you hooked for seasons to come. Sit back, relax, and let us help you find your new favorite series.
Action
Sons of Anarchy takes the cake here due its gritty and action packed scenes. It follows Jax Teller, a single father trying to make an impression on a somewhat lawless motorcycle club. The club protects the city from drug dealers, but also runs its own illegal arms trading business. Will morality win or will Jax choose a life of crime? You'll just have to see that part for yourself.
Adult Animation
This is a highly debatable category with some of the classic greats like American Dad and The Simpsons, but one show stands out a little more than the rest. Rick and Morty has seen immense praise from critics and consumers alike since first airing in 2013. The show displays the extended comical adventures of crazy scientist grandpa Rick, and his tag-along grandson Morty. Together they save and destroy universes, create all kinds of intense gadgets, and even (spoiler alert) build an amusement park inside of a living person.
Anime
Not to be confused with adult animation, anime is a separate genre in itself. My Hero Academia has gathered an impressive following with its classic superhero story concept that would make even the likes of Stan Lee proud. The heroism displayed by Deku, the young protagonist this show focuses on, is so pure and simply activates a universal appeal inside the viewer to want to keep watching in order to see him succeed against the odds.
Comedy
With such long running fan favorites like Seinfeld and Will and Grace, this category has a close tie that was impossible to settle among two other absolutely hilarious shows, so we're including them both. Though it's not airing new episodes, we had to include Tina Fey's 30 Rock. The show has jokes seemingly back to back to back that keep you laughing throughout the episodes, as well as the inclusion of often zany antics by the cast. Tying 30 Rock for the best in this genre is Key and Peele. If any of you ever enjoyed watching Dave Chappelle or other sketch comedy, this is the show for you. Both Key and Peele take sketches to the max, and play off each other's hilarious characters to create knee-slapping scenes you'll never forget.
Crime
Without any hesitation, we can say Law & Order Special Victims Unit trumps the rest. Currently in its 19th season, this show has been around for nearly two decades and there's good reason. The realism depicted and emotional output is simply extraordinary compared to most, while still keeping a suspenseful and interesting storyline. Each episode is quite diverse from the last, making for an interesting watch throughout the entirety of the seasons.
Drama
This show has been turning heads since the pilot episode due to its misogynistic characters and portrayal of a future dystopian society where women are essentially enslaved as surrogate mothers for the wealthy. Can you guess which show I'm talking about? The Handmaid's Tale features incredibly raw emotion and a heart wrenching storyline that will have you gripping your chairs armrests as you wait with anticipation during each scene. It's so superbly done that both the series and the lead actress have received Emmy's respectively.
Horror
Since 2011, American Horror Story has been leaving quite the impression upon its viewers. The basic premise is an anthology of horror, with each episode representing a different but equally terrifying ghastly scene. These range from psychological horror, to gore, to just about anything horrifying you can imagine. A word to the wise - it might be better to watch this with the lights on.
Sci-Fi
With an impressive collection of 11 seasons, many with 20+ episodes, The X-Files is everything a Sci-Fi fan hopes for. The show depicts two FBI agents doing their best to explain alien phenomenon. It focuses on many different pop culture references, conspiracy theories, and even a bit of mythology, all the while keeping an impressively interesting centralized storyline. After just a few minutes, you'll see why it was one of the longest running Sci-fi programs of all time.
